A Hockey Game and a Four Year Old

Thursday my brother (Joey) and sister-in-law (Leslie) invited me to go to the Nashville Predators game verses Colorado. Mason and Makayla came too. Have you ever been to a hockey game with a 4 year old? She had so many questions.

Makayla – “What are they doing?”

Me – “They are taking a break.”

I explained to her that we were on TV and how when that red light is on it mean we need to take a break for the commercials. I wasn’t sure if she understood, but she accepted my explanation.

Makayla – “What happened?”

Me – “He got in trouble for making the other team fall down.”

The Preds scored in the first period causing the big horn to go off. Everyone jumped out of their seats and screamed our favorite score song which goes something like this “I don’t know what it is about the Predators scoring, but I like it. I love it. I want some more of it…” I had grabbed Makayla and danced around with her hoping she couldn’t make out some of the words. Unless you’ve been to a Preds game you wouldn’t understand. It comes with the territory we are supposed to make fun of the other team. What can I say? We know how to have fun.

Makayla then starts talking about how good we are and cheered some team on called Prelallers. I don’t know who they are but they had her full support.

The second period brought some confusion. We were closest to our goal tender in the 2nd and the Avalanche were swarming our net. Makayla, used to the first period starts screaming. “Go team! Get the ball!” then something about scoring and I busted her bubble by telling her we didn’t want them to score in that goal right now. We needed to score in the one “down there”. “Oh,” she said. I told her they swapped places and that’s when things clicked. She played soccer in the fall and said “Like my team?” That’s when it hit me. She does get it! How cool is that!?

Many sweet questions and a few “Is it over yets” later the game came to an end. We beat them 3 to 2. Gnash came out on the 4 wheeler and rode around. We went to the glass so that Makayla could see him up close.

If you look closely you can see the reflection of her excitement in the glass.

I hope it doesn't sound like I am complaining about her asking questions. After looking over it again I am wondering... I thought her questions were sweet. Thanks Beth.

Oh, I loved this post! It was totally delightful -- imagine the fun of explaining something to someone very young. Something so new. That's great!

Who would of thought Makayla would connect hockey with soccer? It's obvious she was thinking the game through and found a way to make sense of the actions on the ice. Glad you were there with them all, sharing the fun times and making memories with Joey, Leslie, Makayla & Mason.

You do such a great job journaling and sharing your thoughts in your blog.

I can fully relate to Makayla. I get very confused when they switch sides too.
